We are thrilled to introduce ourselves and the vision the Lord has given us for Knysna Hope! Our love for South Africa stems from a short-term music mission trip during our junior year of college. We travelled to Cape Town and the Garden Route for two weeks using music to minister to fellow believers, provide musical training, and hold concerts to engage the community and increase the presence of the local churches. The connection we both immediately felt to the people of South Africa has never left us.

We were both saved as young children and grew up in strong Christian families and Baptist churches. That upbringing has shaped our Christian walk and laid the foundation for our call as missionaries.

We are both graduates of Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, FL. Caleb studied business administration with a focus in business strategy and accounting. Terrah’s degree was in music education with a proficiency in voice. After completing our degrees and getting married in 2009, we moved to Tallahassee, where Caleb earned a masters degree from Florida State University in International Affairs, concentrating in economic integration and trade, specifically in Southern Africa.

Since moving to Tallahassee, Terra worked in two private schools, teaching not only choir, voice and piano, but also art, science, speech, geography, English, and Bible. After leaving the school setting, she opened a private music studio, providing tailored voice and piano instruction for all ages and skill levels, up to thirty students at a time.

After graduating from Florida State, Caleb worked for a multi-national logistics company. With a thorough understanding of the nature of business and the external environment in which it operates, he has developed skills in coordinating and managing multiple parties across various regions to achieve specific results.

We are active members of First Baptist Church, Tallahassee, FL (our sending church), participating in sanctuary choir, small ensembles, handbells, and children’s ministry. Terrah was the children’s choir coordinator for two years. This church has taught us what it means to truly be in a community and engage a city on multiple levels for the spread of the gospel.

Around Easter 2015, we were going about leading our everyday life, working and serving at First Baptist.  We were busy and happy raising our two small children, Levi and Chloe. Although life was good, something was missing. We felt there was something more our family needed to do. At that point we never would dreamed the Lord would call us to work in missions together. And yet the Lord did just that!

We both appreciate and understand the powerful role that music plays in worship and in building bridges across cultures. When the Lord called us to South Africa as missionaries, our first thought was how to use this passion for music and the arts for the furtherance of the gospel? We immediately envisioned starting an arts academy with Caleb on the administrative end and Terrah on the educational side. With these thoughts in mind, we set up a Skype call with our friends the Golsons, who are here in Knysna with us. As we were discussing their ministry and future plans, before even mentioning our vision for an academy, they shared that they felt the Lord was leading them to open a fine arts academy!  It was immediately clear to all of us that the Lord was leading this conversation and was already lining up the individuals He wanted to make this a reality.

The Lord miraculously provided for us to raise support full time. From November 2015 to September 2016, we were on the road 2-3 weeks out of every month, traveling the United States, making connections and building relationships with individual families, churches, and organizations. We simply shared the story of God's call in our lives and the vision for Knysna Hope. It was such a rewarding and challenging process; we know that the prayer and financial partnerships that were developed and that are still being developed are vital to the success of our call in South Africa. Be sure to check out our support page to partner with us!

We arrived here in Knysna in September, 2016. We absolutely love our new city and home. God has been gracious to us in allowing us to hit the ground running with a team already here.

God has uniquely prepared us for this mission in Knysna, South Africa. We believe he orchestrated our educational background, professional qualifications, and ministry experience to align with the specific needs of the Knysna Hope vision. We are thrilled to use the skills God has already equipped us with to bring his kingdom work in Knysna to fruition. We couldn't imagine anything more exciting and the opportunity to be called into His Kingdom work in Knysna is both humbling and overwhelming. And yet, we have complete confidence because "He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it" -1 Thessalonians 5:24.
